Walls were constructed with woven wattle sticks, and then a mud mixture (daub) was smeared over it.

A detatched kitchen dating from the 1500s. Kitchens often burned down and so were often detatched from the main house in wealthier farmsteads. Notice the meats hanging above the fire to smoke.

Lower left corner spits for roasting. Ropes at the top hold the hanging meats above the fire area to smoke them.

Oven is heated by building a fire in it. Coals are raked out of it and put in the cavity below it to help keep it warm.

Notice that the wood for the kitchen is stacked by size. Smaller faggots give off more heat and burn at a more constant temperature.
